IPN Student Timeline

Summer 1 -  Enter July 1
     Select Summer Rotation by early June
     What are the expectations of the rotations?
     Orientation sessions are held by IPN and Graduate School in early
      July
     In early July fill out the Pre-Rotation Form (this is different for the
      first rotation)
     Attend NeuroFest all summer
     Attend Summer Course, if necessary
Fall 1  -  ~September 1
     Sign up for Courses in August
     Attend Seminar and Journal Club and Neurolunch
     Second Rotation (submit 2nd Pre-Rotation Form) should start
      ~Sept 1
     Prepare Neurolunch talk for early Sept
     Fill out Post-Rotation Form for summer rotation in Sept
 Spring 1  -  ~January 1
     Sign up for spring Courses in  October
     Attend Seminar and Journal Club and Neurolunch
     Third Rotation (3rd Pre-Rotation Form) should start ~ Jan 1
     Prepare Neurolunch talk for early Jan
     Fill out Post-Rotation Form) for second rotation in Jan
     Written Comprehenisve Exam occurs (see pg 9-10 of handbook)
Summer 2 -  ~July 1
     Prepare NeuroFest talk covering third rotation
     Fill out Post-Rotation Form for third rotation
     Begin thesis research
     Write NRSA (for Aug 5, if possible)
Fall 2  -  ~September 1
     Sign up for Elective Courses in the spring
     Attend Seminar and Journal Club and Neurolunch
     Continue thesis research
     Sign up for Spring Elective Courses in the fall  -  you may also
    need to sign up for NSCI999-03  (READ THIS)
You MUST complete 40 credits by this spring semester.
Spring 2  -  ~January 1 
     Attend Seminar and Journal Club and Neurolunch
     Sign up for Thesis Research for fall
     Continue thesis research
     Annual Neurolunch talk
     Oral exam - see pg 10-11 of handbook for rules (exam form)
Summer 3 -  July 1
     Thesis research full time
     Attend Seminar
     Organize Thesis Committee and get SAC Approval
Fall 3   
     Attend Seminar and Neurolunch
Spring 3
     Meeting of thesis committee (coincident with Neurolunch talk)
             (Send email to SAC chair informing of the meeting)
     Thesis proposal (form)
     Begin planning your first manuscript submission
     Attend Seminar and Neurolunch
Summer/Fall/Spring 4 etc.
     Thesis committee meets  coincident with
                                       Annual Neurolunch talk
     Expect to submit your first manuscript before the end of your
     4th year
     Attend Seminar and Neurolunch
Completion
     1. Schedule a Thesis Defense Seminar
              First with Becky and Bill (for approval), then Barry (for room
               & website)
     2. Thesis Reviewers Report is due >1 week prior to defense
         Note, at the bottom of the form it tells you to email your abstract to
         gradacadaffrs@georgetown.edu and include your full name, title
         of your dissertation using the word DISSERTATION in the subject
         line.
     3. Get Thesis Ballot and Thesis Cover Sheet signed at defense
     4.  After completing the corrections, submit thesis electronically
     5.  Now you have to turn in the ETD form (Electronic Thesis
           & Defense)
     6.  Also the SED form (Survey of Earned Doctorates)

Note:  The Graduate School does not want YOU to turn in the Comprehensive Exam Ballot or the Thesis Ballot personally.   Make a copy and then get an official person to do it.
